This is one of eight reflections from student UNESCO Ambassadors at Lyng Hall who were invited to the Cities of Remembrance symposium in Ypres and Dunkirk which took place from 20-27 May. An earlier blog describes the background in more detail and points to seven other reflections from the visit. This reflection covers the theme of heritage and Daria writes:
Heritage
We were able to see the flotillas, a boat parade that is passed down through generations in Dunkirk to remember the things that happened long ago.

We also visited a number of international cemeteries. This taught us to cherish our past, our heritage, and ourselves. I feel hap-piness when thinking about how that trip changed me for the better and made me want to learn more about my heritage and my family’s story. This inspired my poem.
Heritage
Something that makes you—You
The flotillas:
something passed down
new generations.
From one generation
to the next.
The cemeteries:
A place of respect
to those who fought;
A place of remembrance
for the lives sacrificed
for our freedom.
Let’s spend these moments
To pay respects
To those who came before us
