This is one of eight reflections from student UNESCO Ambassadors at Lyng Hall who were invited to the Cities of Remembrance symposium in Ypres and Dunkirk which took place from 20-27 May. An earlier blog describes the background in more detail and points to seven other reflections from the visit. This reflection covers the theme of friendship and Deborah writes:
I recently had the incredible opportunity to go on a school trip to Belgium with my friends and teachers. It was truly an unforgettable experience, with a lot of learning, adventure, and reflection. We were able to take part in many fun and mesmerising activities, all the while deepening our understanding of the wars that took place there and the impact they had on so many lives.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was a guided bus tour that took us to important historical sites. We stopped at cemeteries where thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in the war are buried. Walking among the rows of gravestones was really emotional. It made me truly realise the amount of loss and sacrifice, and reminded me of the importance of remembering those who fought for our future.
Another highlight of the trip was the chance to meet new people from different countries and backgrounds. By the end of the journey, we became close friends with many of them. These friendships are something I will always remember.
