Five CAIF members from Coventry and one member now residing in Kiel, arrived at their hosts’ homes on Sunday 26 May to very warm and friendly welcome. Our group was joined, in Meschede, by a group of twelve members of ARP in Vannes, Brittany. Friends of Meschede and Coventry, known to us for many years.
During the next few days there were organised trips out to churches of different denominations (including a small Jewish synagogue that was being renovated); a shooting museum; a Jewish synagogue and cemetery. But the first day started with a trip back in time to schooldays of the past. A 100 years-old schoolroom within a modern-day high school. We practised our writing of old Germanic script and learnt that the school had been set up in this small community by a local businessman and benefactor.
We enjoyed great hospitality with picnics and evening meals. One memorable picnic was the day we went to the source of the River Alme …. not only because it was pouring with rain but the quality and abundance of the food and drink. Fortunately for us, the sun came out at picnic time (fortunately there was a covered area).
Later in the week, after a procession and a voluntarily attended mass in Meschede, the group came to Eversburg, for a picnic lunch in one of the hosts’ garden. Then in the afternoon, there was the Schützenfest parade through the streets. This celebrates the old custom of defending their township.
On Friday night there was a buffet, preceded by speeches, thanks and presentations. The Deputy Mayor of Meschede made a speech and we awarded our Certificates of Friendship while the Bretons gave gifts of cider and food goodies.
Saturday was free time and later on a game of Boules for those who wanted to join in.
Sunday was time for thanks, farewells and an early leave taking for home.
And we all agree it was a great week!
